Occasionally when someone visits my blog, he or she will see a link to a feel-good story I think is worth of passing on to my readers. Today is one of those days. I chose this story because I didn’t know her identity was secret for so long. Here’s the link: https://nypost.com/2020/11/21/original-gerber-baby-ann-turner-cook-celebrates-94th-birthday/
Given the temperature in today’s world, just saying those two words aloud in 2021 during Black History month is a cringe-worthy thought. I googled them to make sure my assumption of their origination was correct. Turns out, I was right. Check out https://www.wooden-blinds-direct.co.uk/blog/what-are-plantation-shutters/
While plantations photos define a beautiful architectural period in American history from the outside, they also harken back to the ugly period of slavery from the inside. Now that most of us are communicating through Zoom, I couldn’t help but realize how many people of all races have them in their background. No, I don’t think home owners and landlords should take a sledge hammer to their window treatment. Rather, I chose to shine a light on this topic to raise awareness. However, if the shutter industry decides the term is offensive to descendants of slaves and is no longer acceptable, I think the effort would be applauded.
In honor of today being the 17th of January, I thought I’d post about the number 17. Does anything jump out at you when hear number 17? Do you think about a teenager, the letter Q, a birthday, anniversary, or something else? When I googled the word seventeen, I was surprised by how many different things came up in my search. Seventeen is the name of a magazine, a South Korean boy band, and a 1951 Broadway musical. If your thought process is like mine, that 9-letter number just means one more than 16. However, if your name is LeBron James, it means triple success: 17 NBA seasons, helping the Lakers win their 17th championship, and a pricey sneaker line (LeBron 17) for preschoolers to adults. Wow! Just typing the previous sentence shows why he’s earned his crown and my new nickname for him – Mr. 17. Whether you’re an NBA fan of the Eastern Conference or the Western Conference, you should be happy knowing 17 is the number that ties both sides with championships.
I hope my readers had a safe transition into January 2021. Sorry for the long delay between my first post and my second post. I have a legitimate excuse. No, it wasn’t blogger’s block. My computer of seven years was slowly going out and completely froze late last year.
After I jumped that hurdle, I continued to ponder what should be my first topic. Initially, I thought about something serious and meaningful, then it dawned on me that finding love is something that’s both serious and meaningful. So that led me to write about The Bachelor. No, I’m not a regular viewer who watches the show with pricey popcorn, liquor-store wine, and a bucket for my tears. However, I do enjoy the opening entrances of the ladies to spot the creative ones. I find it interesting that it took two Black bachelorettes (one full, one half) and twenty-five seasons to get a Black bachelor. Perhaps, all the attention surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement helped to open the door. What stood out to me the most in the first episode wasn’t Matt James’ chiseled bod or him self-soothing with a prayer in the presence of the contestants before his official quest began. Rather, it was Matt’s conversation with host Chris Harrison about the pressure he felt being cast the first Black bachelor and him not wanting his pick to tick off anyone because he is biracial. At that moment, the writer in me was hoping Chris would say, “The producers and I felt that issue was a concern you may have and we have an encouraging message for you from the former Bachelor in Chief, Barack Obama.” When that didn’t happen, I thought he should be billed more accurately as the first biracial blackchelor. I also wished we could have a tête-à-tête to share my wisdom I’ve learned from writing a book about interracial love. Regardless of how Matt’s love quest ends, I think it’s great the show finally took this long-overdue leap.
Welcome to Lady Canaday’s blog! This is my first blog post. I’m excited to start a new chapter by using this platform to reach out to old fans and hopefully some new ones. If you’re unfamiliar with the blogosphere, the basics are listed below:
• It’s an informal journal written by a blogger
• Blog is short for weblog
• What a blogger submits is a post
• Content may or may not be limited to one topic
• Usually contains videos, links, and pictures
• Posts may be daily, weekly, monthly, or whenever
• There’s no set word count
Now, that I’ve covered the fundamentals of blogging, I’ll get to my next point: What will my blog be about? It won’t be about politics. I’ll leave that hot-button topic to CNN, FOX NEWS, and The View panelists. The best way I can describe it is that the content will be about something that draws my fingers to my laptop. I don’t have a set schedule, so you’re encouraged to visit this web page weekly for a new post. Readers may also submit a topic idea. If I select a reader’s topic, I’ll be sure to give that reader a shout-out in the post. While I ponder what my first topic will be, I want to send my congrats the top 2019 bloggers.
