On March 7, I was caught up in the hype of NBA All-Star Sunday. After the televised festivities, I assumed I’d watch a movie and go to bed. Instead, my mom convinced me to watch their interview with America’s TV Queen, Oprah. At first, I started watching to see what the parties were wearing (particularly Meghan’s reported $4,700 Armani dress), admire the scenery, and hopefully get an adorable glimpse of their son. As soon as I watched the first segment, I was hooked and knew this interview wasn’t just about fluff stuff. I was saddened yet not shocked to hear the lovebirds speak about the negativity they experienced once they tied the knot. I understand why they felt unsupported and compelled to start a new life elsewhere.
I hope something positive will come from their interview in both their personal and professional lives. Tomorrow isn’t a given. I hope they are able to mend their relationships on both sides of their respective families. As for the institution they mentioned: every well-meaning organization, whether it’s the monarchy or something else, needs to re-evaluate and make policy changes to better serve their members. While many supporters of the monarchy may disagree with them shedding light on sensitive matters to the public, I do believe we can all agree that the best news from the interview was learning their expecting a daughter.
